seeing yourself.
I think almost all of us can think of a moment where we felt understood and seen by someone when we needed it the most. I do not claim that there are many people out there who are paying attention to the people around them ... but I do believe we experienced this feeling of being understood at some point in some way ... in a Book that made us feel understood, a friend who is sitting with us in silence because they can’t find words comforting enough for the valleys of our life... a loving gaze in painful experiences ... or a video that shares struggles we all know too well .... I thought of those moments and how they made me feel.
They made me feel seen. Okay about myself. Calm. Understood. When others see behind my walls, I am willing to see myself in the light of grace and warmth. My way of handling my true self becomes more gentle and my love more tender. I want to be that kind of person. The one who sees people and the one who sees behind my own walls.
I wrote quite some pieces on being your own friend... I think understanding yourself is part of this process ...of learning to love yourself. It means listening to what you felt and this includes listening to what you felt when you made mistakes and did things you wish you never did ...Believe that you are worth listening to your doubts, reasons, justifications, guilt and shame. You are a beautiful chaos worth being explored and discovered. Unveiling all the darkest parts of your heart in the presence of sympathy and tenderness.
